As always, we took out breakfast in the Epicurean and, as always, breakfast was superb: By now, the waitress knows what we have and has almost reached the point of telling us what we’ll be having. Hmm🤔, maybe we need to start mixing up our eating habits. Anyway, for today, we stuck with what we always have and very nice it was too.

Well, that was a pointless paragraph wasn’t it?

After breakfast we needed to decide what we were going to do. We’ve been to St Vincent before and to be honest, it’s never been our cup of tea but we did remember one bar that we went to (February 2022) when the consequences of Covid were still raw and so many constraints were placed upon visitors. At that time, we had decided to stay within the Port Shops area and found a bar with a clear view of the ship. We nicknamed it the cage bar as the outside seating area was fenced in with barbed wire along the top 🥴 so , we decided that was where we were to go again but before that it was back to the cabin to, have a rest!

Returning to our cabin we found that our cabin steward hadn’t yet made it up, mind you we were earlier than normal. So, we snuck in onto our balcony and told him we’d stay out of his way and that we’d quite likely be only half an hour anyway. So, we sat on the balcony, The Duchess having a little snooze while I surveyed the sea looking for sharks, dolphins, giant squid, etc but saw noting. After half an hour I went inside to gather our stuff for going ashore completely oblivious to that fact that our steward had been in, drawn our curtains to keep the sun out, switched on the wall lights, made the bed and hoovered: This is why The Duchess calls Mr Magoo, Poor Podge had seen none of it. From this point onwards, our Cabin Steward was known as The Ninja.

Eventually, we went ashore straight to our ‘Cage Bar’ whereupon The Duchess despatched His Podgeness to get the drinks. At the bar, Podge asks for 4 Caribs: Podge is told that if he gets a bucket, it’s 6 for the price of five. Obviously, Podge spotting a bargain, bought the bucket and went back with 6-Caribs. Poor Podge was left in no doubt as to the error of his ways and didn’t help himself when he promised to drink all the extras himself. But drink them he did. 😋  And Podge was once more feeling a little groggy. So back to the ship for a bit of a rest, again! During this ‘rest’ period, The Duchess noticed that after the lifeboats had been brought back on board after they’d had their play on the water, one of the boats hatches had been left open: This concerned The Duchess and felt that she should mention it somebody. Yeah Yeah said Podge and turned over and went back to sleep.

The evening was preceded by fivesies (Mai Tais and Pink Gin Spritz) followed by dinner in the Glass House accompanied by a glass of Bacchus before making our way to the Crows Nest for our evening drinks of Cosmopolitand and a rather nice glass of Cotswold Malt Whisky, yummy, yummy. Once more we meet the Hotel Manager who stopped by for a chat. This was the time, the time for The Duchess to express her concern that the lifeboat number 12 had been left. open after its little foray onto the water. She was worried that if it rains it will fill up with water 💦. ‘Debbie’, said the hotel manager, ‘if you [need] to use the lifeboat, getting your feet will be the least of your worries’. She conceded the point, but she did notice that the hatch was closed the next day. She remains convinced it was down to her!

Then, it was time for bed actually, on the same day we got up. 👏

Sitting on our balcony, we watch Rum Runner II calmly sail out fully laden with quiet but eager passengers from the Britannia, one just knew that it would be essential to be on the balcony when they return. How do I know this? Because Podge and The Duchess have been there: got the hat, got the t-shirt, got the headache.

As for Grenada itself, well, we’ve been here so many times before that we decided to have nice quiet day relaxing and reading, determined as I was to finish Sharpe’s Triumph. And finish it I did and as I put down my book (kindle) I heard an unmistakable twang of steel drums beating out, very loudly, a mixture of Caribbean Sing Song music accompanied by a lot of very, very happy Britannia passengers, clearly brewing a headache or three: The Rum Runner was back.

This evening, we sampled the offerings from The Beach House where we tried Crispy Fried Mahi Mahi burgers and fries preceded by Caribbean Saltfish Fritters (see sample menu 3) , creations of Shivi Ramoutar, all of which was rather yummy but a little too much for Podge’s tiny tummy 😋.  But, we vowed to return (many times as it happened) to sample more if not all of the dishes on offer.

Dinner completed, we switched camp to The Crows Nest and made camp at the bar dedicating ourselves to sampling whiskies and cosmopolitans. Whilst there we had the pleasure of the company of the Hotel General Manager (Ajit) who was very interested in our cruising stories and plans. After that, we met a new waiter (CoCo, not sure that’s how it’s spelt) who was being shown round the ship and was introduced to us! We did feel very posh. We did also agree that Ajit was one of those officers that you just knew you could get on with, go for a drink with and, trust.

After convincing ourselves that we had finished sampling for the day, evidenced by The Duchess and her jolly twittering and His Podgeness feeling extremely sleepy and wobble, we retired to our suite and once again failed to goto bed the same day we got up.

First of all I’ll start by saying that no tat was bought today: The Duchess must be losing her touch! 🫣

Post breakfast, we decided to do some extra walking laps, though not too many before going ashore.  During our perambulation (walk) we check the building works shoreside: It’s now showing a 4 story something but not yet complete. We’re to return to St Lucia in a couple of weeks so will take photos from the ship and add them there for comparison with 2023.

Eventually, we plucked up the courage/ energy and went shoreside and checked out the bars in readiness for St Patrick’s Day and found them to be ‘up to the job’, before settling on a nice corner bar, named the Pink Papaya. Oh my days how come I never found this bar before. Have been calling into St Lucia every year since 2004 but never ever found the Pink Papaya. We will most definitely be calling back. The staff were so so friendly, the prices very competitive and the music so atmospheric. Also a great place to keep an eye on ship from 😋.

2, or more, beers later, we returned to the mother ship and, just as treat for moi, went to the buffet and made a couple of chip sandwiches 😋 then changed location to The Sunset Bar for the obligatory MaiTai and Pink Gin Spritz (twice). Then, missed the most beautiful sunset. 🥺 Still, there’s always another day and another sunset 🌅.

For Dinner, we opted for the Glass House where we had rather delicious Chicken Popcorn, Thai Beef Salad & yummy Curried Spiced Seared Scallops (no deserts though as we’re watching our figures 🫣) all washed down with a couple of glasses of Bacchus wine before retiring for the night failing, once again, to go to bed the same day we got up 💤

Try as we might, neither of us couldn’t remember Bonaire until we actually got there. I still don’t understand why, because it really is a most beautiful wondrous location with the clearest of waters and, we had at least remembered that part.

Having breakfasted with our fellow guests in the Epicurean we went ashore to explore shops and bars. The walk to town was only 10 minutes but on the way we spotted not one but two turtles right by the waters edge, a number of blue parrot fish (well blue fish), loads of crabs scurrying among the rocks and one huge lizard thing that The Duchess insists was an iguana and I’m not one to argue but I’m not convinced it was 😋.

Having found a bar from which we could watch the world go by, we bought a drink, possibly more than 1 and sat back and just chilled. Eventually however we did strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger who said that Bonaire was currently threatened by an oil slick from a sunken boat. All seemed ok where we were and fingers crossed 🤞 that it can be contained before any lasting damage. After all,  Bonaire is the only certified Blue Destination in the world, Bonaire has been practicing radical ecological conservation since the 1960s. Though the two main human-inhabited nuclei, Kralendijk and Rincon, are rather minimalistic, they act as your gateway into unimaginable spectacles. From the pristine coral reefs to the clear-watered mangrove forests, from the pink lakes and white salt mountains to the desert cacti, you can hardly believe that such a place still exists. [words ‘stolen’ from our Port Guide by P&O].

Anyway, as we slowly returned to the ship, we both agreed we really did need to ease off on eating & drinking but there was to be a problem. We had been invited to a senior officers lunch & epicurean (fine dining) meal accompanied by much free flowing fizzy pop and wine the following day: Clearly, day 6 will be a tough day so we retired to the Crows Nest for a [quick] drink in the Crows Nest where we had a BAFTA Cocktail (yummy yummy and very strong).

Eventually however, we retired to bed. Day 5 was yet another day where failed to go to bed the same day we got up. 💤

Breakfast was quite leisurely, as it always is in the Epicurean, though I did need to provide some level of IT consultancy to a nice Valerie who was having trouble with WiFi and the on-board app: she had been misadvised on how to connect. Fortunately, the ‘Techno Guru’ (His Podgeness) was able to show Valerie what she needed to do to connect and provide strict instruction on what not do which of course she ignored but eventually learned what the correct way was all all was well.

We then joined an excursion called ‘Scenes of Curaçao’ – basically this was so that we could learn about their lovely big bridge (it is big), their ferry and their swing bridge before checking out a couple of churches and cemeteries before going to the Curaçao (pronounced Cure-ah-souw) distillery where we would be able to taste the famous liqueur and even learn how to make our own cocktails. We went there last year however so we just cut straight through to the samples and the shop. Finally, we got to our ultimate destination, Mambo Beach, where all the beautiful people go but, I still managed to get in ;-). Once there, we headed straight to our favourite bar (Riléks Beach Bar) and settled for our annual cocktail treat. We’ve been there many times before but still can’t remember the cocktails names so we just show a picture of the ones we had on our last visit.

The Duchess then bought yet another Caribbean Lady for her collection then back to the ship we went (to fill up the ‘Tat’ Shelf that the Duchess growing) to just chill 😎 for the rest of the afternoon before going for Dinner in the Glass House which was of course accompanied by a rather nice glass of Bacchus. By the time we finished our wine(s) and Cosmopolitans (for the Duchess) it was bed time 🥱 for some much needed sleep. 💤
