Below are a number of tips that should be considered before embarking on any extended cycle ride.

Health & Safety / Comfort

Always wear a helmet . . .

Wear plenty of sun bloc (unless its cold and raining of course) . . .

Sunglasses help prevent fatigue and flies in the eyes ! . . .

Drink BEFORE you feel thirsty . . .

Don’t put your roadside foot down when you stop . . .

Don’t set off/stop without looking behind you first.

Wear a helmet . . .

If going on a long, lone ride, ensure somebody know your intended route and expected completion time . . .

Carry a Mobile Phone and/or money for a phone box . . .

Dri flow or Lycra type shirts are infinitely better than cotton for cycling, and they don’t have to be tight fitting . . .

Thin trainers can become uncomfortable on long rides. Ensure you have stout soles . . .

Basic Maintenance

Oil your chain properly – clean it first using an old toothbrush and put the right sort of lube on it . . .

Check your tyre pressure. Too low a pressure can encourage punctures as well as slowing you down . . .

Never be afraid to ask somebody for advice if you’re at all unsure about aspects of the cycle . . .

Water (lots of it on hot days) . . .

Cycle Pump . . .

Spare Tube (Check correct size) . . .

Puncture Repair Kit . . .

Tyre Levers . . .

Spanner for wheel removal . . .

A helmet . . .

Recommended Riding Practices

Vaseline applied to your forehead will stop stingy sweat dripping into your eyes.

Get into the right gear before the hill, not when you’re on it . . .

Never, ever, follow a recce crew member if you want to get where you think you ought to be ! . . .

Always be prepared to ply the recce crew with lots of drinks as they will need them if they are help you get home (possibly) . . .

In any event, always ensure you fully understand how to operate all aspects of your cycle for setting out on any long ride . . .
