The Day Before The Day

Posted: August 30, 2010 in Uncategorized

So, today means there is just one more sleep to cruising, yet, more importantly, it is just one more sleep to Debbie’s Birthday when she hits 49 and we all know what that means don’t we? It means that tomorrow is officially the start of Debbie’s 50th year.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to make a fuss over this but it is a very important and sadly overlooked stage in anyones life :-). We always seem to celebrate completing 50 years but never the beginning of that year :-).

Sadly, Debbie’s birthday also heralds the start of the Christmas push. As some may know, I just love Christmas: Actually, that’s not strictly true. What I really enjoy is the run up to Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle. I love all the Christmas Shows: I love all the Christmas Songs: I love the Christmas Carols and yes, even though I may be agnostic, I just love the Religious Services and even though I have never made it, I would love to attend a mid-night mass: Is that wrong of me? I don’t know. Maybe deep down I’m less agnostic than I think. I remember that moment in Lourdes for instance. Anyway…

All the build up for Christmas, the running around in that last week planning, sourcing and preparing everything for the event and yet it nearly always turns out to be a bit of anti climax. Why?

I’ll tell you why. It’s because from the beginning of September, the commercial side of Christmas is forced upon us, first the supermarkets, then the garden centres and sheds. The pubs and restaurants put out their Christmas Menus in July / August (if not sooner) and it’s round about this time of year when the Christmas themed catalogues start to drop through your door. Even now, in August, we have Christmas stores up and running in London! I love it all, I do: I absolutely love it. But why oh why must we have it for three whole months? Why can’t we just have Christmas in December?

Anyway, before all of this, we have Last Night of the Proms, Halloween, Guy Fawkes and Children in Need to enjoy. The last three months of the year has to be, for me, the best three months; even with Christmas playing through the whole period. Better still, it’s my Birthday in November…..

Which brings me back to Tomorrow:
The start of Debbie’s 50th Year:
Just one more sleep to go….
